Types of Canadian work permits:
Basically, there are two types of work permits- open work permit and an employer-specific work permit.
Open Work Permit
Allows you to work for any employer. And does not require any offer letter from an employer. The applicants who apply through an open work permit do not require the Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA), which indicates you can work for any employer in Canada except for those companies that do not comply with labour requirements.
Employer-specific work permit
This type of work permit allows you to work for a specific employer and therefore it comes with certain conditions which will be written on it. These include type of work, places where you can work, duration of work. The employer must obtain an LMIA (Labour Market Impact Assessment), from ESDC (Employment and Social Development Canada). It permits recruiters to employ foreign skilled workers for occupations.
Conditions for the open work permit
- Proof of financial stability that can take up all expenses of your and your family’s stay in Canada
- You must not have any criminal record
- Medical examination Proof that you are in good health
- Meet all other eligibility conditions such as language skills, biometric data, and insurance
- Proof that you will not overstay in Canada on the expiry of your work permit visa.
- Document proof that shows you have enough funds to support yourself and your family during your stay in Canada
- There must be no criminal record against you and submit a police clearance certificate as proof
- Will not pose a danger to Canada’s security
- Must be in good health and able to take a medical exam if required
- Pledge not to work for an employer listed as ineligible by the government under certain conditions.
- A valid passport with a validity of more than 6 months from the planned date of arrival in Canada.

Work Visa for dependents
The immigration of dependent family members is allowed under the category of dependent work permit. You may be entitled to have your spouse and children join you in Canada. The dependent children will be eligible to attend Canadian educational institutions. The spouse will also be allowed to apply for an open work permit if willing to work.
WHO Can Be counted as a dependent?
The spouse or children can be included in the dependent visa, whereas parents and grandparents are required to be sponsored by permanent residents or Canadian citizens.
