Start-Up Visa Program

The Start-up Visa Program grants Canadian permanent residence to qualified immigrant entrepreneurs. The Program encourages immigrants with an innovative business that helps in creating jobs for local Canadians.  The SUVP will link immigrants with the Canadian private sector businesses, (angel investor groups, venture capital funds or business incubators) and help the smooth settlement of their start-up business in Canada. 

 A letter of support will be given to successful applicants from a government-designated entity (angel investor group, venture capital fund or business incubator).  Initially, Immigrants can come to Canada on a work permit and later get support from their designated Canada-based investor.

A designated entity is a private sector business incubator, venture capital fund or angel investor based in Canada. 
A designated entity must fulfill the following criteria: 

  • To qualify for angel investor status, a designated investor group must invest at least $75,000 in a qualifying business. The candidate can also qualify if he makes at least two investments from angel investor groups totalling $75,000.
  • Venture capital funds must invest at least $200,000 into qualifying companies. Additionally, candidates can qualify if two or more designated venture capital funds contribute at least $200,000.

A designated business incubator should accept the qualified candidate into its business incubator program.

The requisites to qualify for permanent residence: 

  1. The entrepreneur must incorporate their intended business and carry-on business in Canada.
  2. The business must not allow any other person to hold 50 per cent or more of the voting rights in the corporation.
  3. At least 10 per cent of the voting rights must be owned by the candidate in the corporation. 

If Applicant already has a viable start-up business, it will take around 4-6 months to get a certificate/letter of support from a designated entity. The application for permanent residence can be submitted once a letter of support is received. The application for final visa issuance will take 18-months approximately.
